Why You Should Always Take Your Jewelry Off Before Going to Bed

Many of us have a special piece of jewelry that is so dear to our hearts that we never want to take it off. And sometimes, we are too tired to remove all those rings and bracelets before falling into the hay.

Although many of us are guilty of falling asleep with jewelry, there are some very serious downsides to wearing it while resting every night.

We fully identify with this choice that many of us face before going to bed. So we decided to find out why sleeping in your jewelry may not be safe for your health or your gems.

It Will Be Hard To Take Your Ring Off In The Morning

You may have noticed that your hands and fingers look a bit bigger in the morning. This is because, when we remain immobile at night, there is an accumulation of fluids within the tissues and they make us wake up with slightly swollen hands.

If you fall asleep with a ring, it will be much more difficult to remove it in the morning.

To remove the ring from your swollen fingers, you will need to use liquid soap or vegetable oil to help it slide, or even put your hand in ice water to reduce the swelling.

It May Disrupt Your Sleep

Sleeping with a necklace may put your night’s rest at risk, especially if you’re a big tosser and turner between the sheets. Chains can get tangled in your hair or tangled around your neck, disturbing your sleep.

If your favorite necklace has pendants or charms, you can push it while it sleeps and wake it up. If you can’t imagine ditching your sentimental jewelry at night, opt for designs that won’t interfere with your sleep, like necklaces made from soft, flexible materials.

It May Irritate Your Skin

Some materials used to make jewelry, such as nickel, can cause allergic reactions and leave the skin itchy and red.

And while gold and silver may seem like a safe option, they often contain other metals as well. If you have sensitive skin and are prone to allergies, make sure your jewelry is made of 14k gold or higher.

The higher the carat, the purer the gold, and the less likely it is to cause a reaction.

Your Earlobes May Become Saggy

Sleeping with studs can cause discomfort, hitting the hay with large, heavy earrings can age and elongate the earlobes.

The earlobes lose their elasticity over the years and, if you don’t give them time to rest and breathe at night, they can sag and fall off.

Wearing earrings at night can smell too. When the sebum secreted by the skin mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria, it can make your piercings pretty smelly.

It May Cause Bacterial Build-up

If you don’t take your jewelry out for proper cleaning, your favorite pieces can become a breeding ground for dirt and bacteria.

The rings that come into direct contact with the skin act as moisture traps, creating a perfect environment for the growth of bacteria.

It’s Not Good For Your Jewelry

Although many people have a habit of sleeping in their engagement ring or wedding ring, it is best to remove them before bed to keep them in tip-top shape.

If you have restless sleep, you can hit your bling on your bed or nightstand and crack it. When you sleep, your teeth can get caught in the tissues, which can wear them down.

Sleeping in your jewelry can also cause staining, as we sweat during sleep, and the sweat that ends up on the jewelry can dull its shine.

Do you wear jewelry when you sleep? What else would you add to this list?
